Wow! 6 weeks can be a reeeeeeeally long time can’t it!
We’re not quite back to school, but I can see the finish line. There have been some celebrations and challenges, and I’m spending some time reflecting on these. Learning from both the successes and the failures so that I can make tweaks and amendments for a better school holiday next time. Obviously, as you know I LOVE an analogy, I am going to tie this in with how you work in business. Succeed or fail, there is always a lesson to be learnt. In fact I think you can learn more from your failures, and that’s where you develop your grit and resilience too.
What have I done over the holidays
Well, as a quick rundown: I spent a week being assessed, achieved my Certified OBM®️ status and I’m super proud. Mr Strive4 also worked for and gained a new qualification, so some celebrations here 🥂
We got away for a quick camping trip and saw The Stunt Runner – Liam Collins – hurdler turned street performer in Bournemouth. Check him out!
We went to Ikea and visited Småland, went on lots of dog walks and spent time with family and friends. Mr Strive4 and I discovered Awesome Thai and definitely recommend it, while the little Strive4s and I had one of our best cinema experiences at Everyman. We’ve also had downtime and lots of films at home, snuggled up with blankets, cushions and the dog.
Overall, a successfully planned holiday; the goal of making it through the 6 weeks has been achieved.
With any plan within your business, whether it’s the business as a whole or a smaller project, you plan it, achieve it, and then review how things went – see what I did there! 😉
Planning for Success
There is a clear process for this. I can say this with 100% confidence as I have a planning mindset. I think ahead, make plans and action them. Planning is my comfort blanket. Whilst it doesn’t stop a curve ball being thrown my way, it’s a way of maximising the control I have, and then it’s easier to deal with those curve balls.
The Process
1. Have a goal in mind
2. Figure out all the tasks needed to get to that goal
3. Create a plan of when and how these tasks will be done
4. Decide what help is needed – whether people or tools – to complete the tasks
5. Work through the planned tasks
6. Achieve the goal
7. Reflect on the process and take feedback for the next project.
These are simple steps, but it’s easy for this to feel overwhelming. As business owners we have a lot going on all the time and no doubt you never truly mentally switch off from it – your business is your baby. If you are not a natural planner, then this will feel even more overwhelming.
