The Truth About Why Goals Matter

Goals. We need them. But in case you’re in any doubt, let me talk to you about how having strong, tangible goals will help you succeed in your business. Let me put to you such a strong case that you’ll be itching to get those goals set NOW.

Everyone talks about goal setting at this time of year; in that sense I’m not telling you anything new. But let’s talk about why we’re setting goals. Successful goals aren’t something you write down and promptly file somewhere, never to be found again. Successful goals align with you and your business vision. They excite you and move you in the right direction.

🎯 Why Goals Matter Even More With ADHD

Goals are particularly important, I feel, when you have an ADHD brain because they help you stay on track. When there are exciting opportunities and ideas flying around left, right, and centre, a goal — no matter how hard — is something that can pull back your focus. With goals in place and a clear direction, it is easier for other people — such as a Certified OBM, for example — to help you reach that goal.

I can speak from experience when I say that when a client has a goal, no matter how many shiny new ideas come their way, it is easier to keep them on track. I’m in a position to question their motives for running with a shiny new idea, weigh up the pros and cons, and highlight the reasons to stick with what we’ve got.

✅ But They Have to Be the Right Goals

The goals do need to be the right type of goals. So at this point, I suggest that you speak with the right people — coaches, mentors, therapists if needed — to get that solid and in place.

You might, for example, decide that you want to launch a membership programme. You want to build a community, create content, and have that one-to-many offering running in the background as an additional income stream to your one-to-one client work. Great idea — lots of people are doing this, so it must be good, right?

But is it right for you?
I can’t answer that for you. This is where you really need to consider whether it’s the right goal.

🧠 And Then There’s the ADHD Layer…

We love ideas. We love interesting. We love shiny new things. It’s easy to lose focus. It’s easy to jump at something because it feels exciting right now. This is why I recommend working with someone who can help you talk it out, verbalise your reasoning, explore the intention behind the goal, and arrive at the decision that is truly aligned.

Prioritisation and long-term thinking come into this too — and they become even more important when you move into the planning stage. Your goals need to be timely, realistic, and supported by clear milestones so that you can keep ticking along even when your motivation fluctuates.

👀 Here’s the Part That Surprises People

I don’t help you set your goals.

Goal-setting is its own process. You might need reflection, mindset shifts, exploration, values work, or conversations that help you shape your big-picture vision. Coaches, mentors and therapists are brilliant for this.

My work begins once you already know what you want.
I help you plan the route and drive the bus to get there — including getting the right people on board, making sure they’re in the right seats, and keeping everything moving.

Without a destination, you end up driving in circles, running out of fuel, and wondering why you feel so lost.
With a destination, we can chart the route, plan the stops, avoid the detours, and keep the journey moving at a pace that works for your brain.

🛠 Turning Goals Into Action (The Hard Part for ADHD Brains)

Once you have the goals, the next step is often the hardest — turning them into action.

This is where ADHD brains tend to struggle. You have the vision, the excitement, the ideas… but turning any of it into daily or weekly action can feel overwhelming. Task initiation, sequencing, momentum, accountability — these are all executive function challenges, not character flaws.

Once you have your goals in place, you need structure around them.
A 90-day plan.
Clear priorities.
Systems that take pressure off your working memory.
Processes that save time and prevent overwhelm.
A way to track progress without feeling judged by your own to-do list.
And support that keeps you moving forward even on the days when your brain isn’t cooperating.

Funnily enough, this is exactly what I help my clients with when I work with them, and you can find out a little more about how I work here.

You create the vision.
You choose the destination.
And I take the goals you’ve chosen and turn them into an operational structure that actually works for you.

I help you stay aligned, stay focused, and stay out of the weeds. No more restarting the same goals every quarter. No more losing momentum every time something shiny appears. Just steady, sustainable progress that works with your brain, not against it.

Setting the right goals is only the first step. The real challenge — for ADHD entrepreneurs especially — is turning those goals into action.

This isn’t about trying harder. It’s about having systems, structure, and support that keep you moving forward.

If this feels like a lot — you don’t need to do it alone.
Let’s chat and create a simple, ADHD-compatible 90-day plan to kick off 2026 with clarity, direction, and momentum.

You bring the ideas; I’ll help you shape them into a plan that actually works for your brain.
